Middleboro Selectman Campaign Announcement

August 29, 2007
Dear Middleboro Resident,

I am running for Selectman in the September 29th election against Wayne Perkins.

I feel honored to have been part of the debate over the summer months. Sadly, I have witnessed first hand what is wrong with the system in Middleborough. Public officials have abused their power to force a major decision on the people by rushing a flawed, fiscally unsound agreement through an expensive, unnecessary, and dangerous outdoor town meeting. We as citizens have one real power over elected officials, our votes at the ballot box.

During the process this summer, many people were forced to be quiet and not allowed to share their opinions during public meetings. I feel this is a travesty! We did not have one public debate about a billion dollar development and its’ affects on our community. We were only allowed four days to read a lengthy legal document which would change our town forever. We did not have the promised public information session reviewing the agreement prior to town meeting and in fact the agreement was not available in published form until the day of the vote. Whether you were for or against the casino issue, you must realize that the process was flawed.

Although I am a board member at CasinoFacts.org PAC, I am not running against the casino but against bad political process. I offer to the citizens of Middleborough a fair open forum which allows people the time to speak, debate, and discuss all of the issues. I promise every citizen a voice when decisions are being made. I believe in giving all issues careful consideration and spirited debate. I believe it is the responsibility of every elected official to listen to the people and explain why decisions are being made. I do not have the answer to every issue but I will seek the thoughts and opinions of the voters.

I would appreciate your support in my bid for Selectman in the September 29th election.

Sincerely,

Greg Stevens
Candidate for Selectman
